Happy Juneteenth Day
June 19, 2019 8:40AM EDT
Today we reflect upon America’s history.
On June 19, 1865, Union Army General Gordon Granger stood on the balcony of the Ashton Villa in Galveston and said, in part, “In accordance with a proclamation, all slaves are free.”
President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. It took over 2yrs for our brothers and sisters in Texas to know they were free men and women.
Again, today we celebrate Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States
