Gillette Releases First-Ever Shaving Commercial Featuring Transgender

In a sign of the changing times, Gillette has released a commercial that shows a father teaching his transgender son how to shave.

The ad, which appears on Gillette’s Facebook page, features Samson Bonkeabantu Brown, a real-life transgender artist from Toronto. It starts off with Brown saying, “Growing up, I was always trying to figure out what kind of man I wanted to become. I always knew I was different.” After he lathers up and nervously begins to shave his face, his real-life father provides comfort, saying, “Now, don’t be scared. Shaving is about being confident.”

A company spokesman says the video, which amassed more than a million views on its first day, represents Gillette’s support of “everyone in their journey to looking, feeling and acting their best every day.”

Is this ad just a disguised way of saying Gillette shaves close enough to leave a man’s skin as smooth as a woman’s? Political correctness aside, is this commercial a good idea business-wise?
